PSV crowned Dutch champions as Feyenoord fail to win

PSV Eindhoven were crowned Eredivisie champions on Sunday after nearest rivals Feyenoord failed to win away to Volendam.

A goalless draw confirmed PSV’s third successive league title, with Peter Bosz’s side now holding an unassailable lead with five matches still to play.

PSV had done their part on Saturday by edging Utrecht 4-3 at home to move onto 71 points from 29 matches. Feyenoord, therefore, needed to win to keep their slim title hopes alive, but the draw left them on 54 points, 17 behind the leaders.

The result sparked immediate celebrations in Eindhoven, where supporters had been waiting in anticipation of Feyenoord dropping points.

PSV’s victory over Utrecht had all but secured the title anyway, given their vastly superior goal difference, with Bosz’s side on plus 42 compared to Feyenoord’s plus 21, but Sunday’s result made it official.

It is only the third time in the club’s history that PSV have won three league titles in a row. They previously managed four successive championships between 1986 and 1989, and again between 2005 and 2008.

The Eindhoven club have now won 27 Dutch league titles, a tally bettered only by Ajax, who have 36.

PSV will now return to the Champions League group phase next season for a fourth consecutive campaign. The Eredivisie runners-up will also qualify automatically for the 2026/27 league phase, while the third-placed side will enter the third qualifying round.

Behind them, Feyenoord remain only one point clear of surprise package NEC Nijmegen, while Twente climbed to fourth after beating Ajax 2-1 away on Saturday.

PSV are due to be presented with the trophy on Tuesday during a ceremony at the Philips Stadion.

The celebrations were, however, slightly overshadowed by the serious injury suffered by captain Jerdy Schouten in the win over Utrecht. The 29-year-old midfielder sustained cruciate ligament damage and is set to miss the World Cup in June.
