PSV clinch 26th Eredivisie title after stunning turnaround

PSV Eindhoven have been crowned Eredivisie champions for the 26th time following a hard-fought 3-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam. The victory capped off a dramatic title race, as PSV overtook rivals Ajax in the final weeks of the season after trailing by nine points.

Heading into the final matchday, Ajax had the upper hand, but their late-season collapse – including a last-minute equaliser conceded to FC Groningen – opened the door for PSV. Despite Ajax beating FC Twente 3-1 on the final day, it wasn’t enough to stop PSV from securing the title.

At Het Kasteel, PSV came out strong, dominating the early stages and creating several chances. After intense pressure, they found their breakthrough when Olivier Boscagli’s cross fell to Ivan Perisic, who nodded home to make it 1-0. Sparta responded well, with Tobias Lauritsen and Ajax loanee Krystian Hlynsson both going close before the break, but PSV held the lead at half-time.

Shortly after the restart, Malik Tillman won a penalty for PSV, only for VAR to overturn the decision. Just minutes later, Sparta equalised through Gjivai Zechiel, briefly putting Ajax back in pole position. However, PSV hit back quickly, with Luuk de Jong restoring their lead from close range after good work by Noa Lang. Malik Tillman sealed the win in the 85th minute, finishing off a well-worked move to make it 3-1.

The win completed a remarkable comeback story for Peter Bosz’s side, who had only won one of their first seven games in 2025. A crucial victory over Heerenveen sparked a late-season surge, with PSV winning nine of their final ten matches. It’s their 13th Eredivisie title this century — more than any other Dutch club — and the fourth time they’ve won back-to-back titles since 2000.

PSV’s attack was relentless all season, scoring over 100 goals with 15 different players finding the net. Eight players scored at least eight goals, including Luuk de Jong (13), Noa Lang (11), Ricardo Pepi (11), Malik Tillman (11), Guus Til (10), Ismael Saibari (10), Johan Bakayoko (9), and Ivan Perisic (9).

The 2025 title also bears similarities to PSV’s 2016 triumph, where Ajax again lost their lead on the final day. As celebrations erupted in Eindhoven, fans hailed a team that turned doubt into glory and wrote a thrilling new chapter in club history.
