American boxer Claressa Shields, the undisputed world champion across three weight divisions, has been suspended by the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission after testing positive for marijuana. The suspension follows her victory over Danielle Perkins on 2 February in Flint, Michigan, where an oral fluid sample collected post-fight indicated the presence of the banned substance.
Marijuana is prohibited in competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The Michigan Commission stated that Shields’ conduct “constitutes an immediate threat to the integrity of professional boxing, the public interest, and the welfare and safety of professional athletes.” Consequently, an investigation has been initiated to determine potential disciplinary actions.
The World Boxing Organization (WBO), lacking the authority to suspend fighters, has requested a “show notice” from Shields, seeking an explanation for the positive test result.
In response to the suspension, Shields took to social media, asserting her innocence by stating, “I’ve never smoked weed.” Her promoter, Dmitriy Salita, expressed confidence in her exoneration, emphasizing her commitment to clean competition and describing her as an inspiration to many.
Shields, 29, is renowned for holding every major world title—WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO—in three weight classes and is a two-time Olympic gold medallist. Her recent victory over Perkins marked a historic achievement, making her the first boxer, male or female, to attain undisputed status in three separate weight divisions during the four-belt era.
