Czech athlete Barbora Spotakova, two-time Olympic champion in javelin throwing, has decided to end her career, the Athletics Federation of the Czech Republic announced.
Spotakova (41) won gold medals at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and four years later in London. She won the Olympic bronze in Rio in 2016.
Her last appearance was on Thursday evening at the final meeting of the Diamond League in Zurich, where she took fifth place.
She still holds the world record, which she set in 2008 in Stuttgart with a shot of 72.28 meters.
– All fairy tales have an end, and mine ended with a very happy ending in the form of a bronze medal at the European Championships in Munich this summer – stated Spotakova in a statement.
The Czech woman added that “her body made it clear that it was time to retire”.
Among other things, in her career, Spotakova was world champion three times (2007, 2011 and 2017), as well as European champion in 2014.
