A landmark occasion occurred as World Aquatics pledges its commitment to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. World Aquatics has officially joined the United Nations’ Sports for Climate Action Framework, an initiative aimed at encouraging the global sports community to contribute to international climate action objectives.
The announcement took place today at a special event on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Given the strong connection between aquatic sports and the natural environment, the significance of climate change threats is substantial. To address this challenge, World Aquatics is enhancing its sustainability efforts by developing an ambitious sustainability strategy that aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and encompasses Environmental, Social, and Governance issues. Becoming a part of the UN Sports For Climate Action Framework signifies a momentous step and dedication on this journey, ensuring the sport’s future sustainability and safeguarding its athletes and sports.
World Aquatics is committed to collaborating with its stakeholders to implement comprehensive initiatives in both the short and long term, aiming to foster increased environmental accountability. This includes raising awareness about climate action, advocating for sustainable and responsible consumption, and promoting communication efforts to drive climate action.
Considerable progress has been achieved in socially-focused programs like the Discover Water initiative, which was also launched on World Drowning Prevention Day in Paris on July 25th. The primary objective of this program is to equip young children worldwide with the necessary knowledge and skills to safely participate in aquatic sports. Recognizing the intrinsic connection between this program and environmental protection, it acknowledges the impact of water quality on safety and biodiversity.
To commemorate World Aquatics’ endorsement of the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu, Business Engagement Lead for UN Global Climate Action, delivered a keynote speech. Additionally, a panel discussion was conducted, moderated by Marie Sallois – Director of Corporate and Sustainable Development at the IOC, and featured the finalists of the 2023 IOC Climate Action Awards.
The panel provided a captivating platform for open discussion, emphasizing the importance of collective action and innovative solutions in safeguarding the future of aquatic sports.
Moreover, today’s event unveiled the finalists for the IOC Climate Action Awards 2024. These prestigious accolades commend the inspiring, groundbreaking, and imaginative approaches towards creating a better world. The finalists encompass a diverse array of projects that are at the forefront of environmental responsibility, spearheaded by Olympic athletes, National Olympic Committees, and International Federations.
In reference to the signing, Husain Al-Musallam, President of World Aquatics, expressed: “Our athletes compete in water. Preserving our oceans, rivers, and lakes is vital for the survival of our planet and our sport. It is crucial that we collaborate as a global sports community – and beyond – to address this pressing issue.”
A range of aquatic sports competitors, such as Anthony Ervin and Pernille Blume, were present at the occasion and engaged in conversations expressing their endorsement for the goals of World Aquatics. Through their attendance, it was evident that athletes are increasingly recognizing the significance of environmental preservation.
The act of World Aquatics signing the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework during the Olympic Games is a significant milestone in the protection of aquatic sports and the planet. With the backing of athletes and specialists, World Aquatics is dedicated to making a lasting difference in this field.
