The WADA and ExCo approve the revisions of 2025 Prohibited List

In a meeting held on 12 September 2024, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Executive Committee (ExCo) approved revisions to the 2025 Prohibited List, which was later officially released in that month. The updated list, which came into effect on 1 January 2025, includes new prohibited substances, changes to dosing intervals for certain medications, and the removal of beta-blockers from skiing and snowboarding.

The Prohibited List, one of the eight International Standards mandated by the World Anti-Doping Code, specifies the substances and methods that are prohibited in both in-competition and out-of-competition settings. WADA issued a reminder last Wednesday that the 2025 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods and the 2025 Monitoring Program are now in effect as of 1 January 2025.

The agency also highlighted some of the major changes, including revised dosing intervals for formoterol, the removal of prohibition on donation of blood and blood components in accredited centers, the classification of hydrafinil as a non-specified stimulant, and clarification that guanfacine is not a prohibited substance. Additionally, beta-blockers are no longer prohibited in any skiing and snowboarding disciplines.

WADA reviews and updates its list annually based on extensive consultation with the List Expert Advisory Group, which gathers information from various sources such as scientific research, medical trends, law enforcement, and pharmaceutical companies. The Health, Medical and Research (HMR) Committee then reviews the findings and makes recommendations to the ExCo before the annual September meeting.

The amended list is then published by 1 October each year, providing a three-month window for athletes, their entourage, and other stakeholders to familiarise themselves with any modifications before they come into effect on the first day of each year. The 2025 Prohibited List, along with the 2025 Summary of Modifications and Explanatory Notes, and the 2025 Monitoring Program, are available for download in English, French, and Spanish on the WADA website.
