Manchester United beat Villarreal 2-0 in the fifth round of the group stage of the Champions League, and the team was led from the bench by Michael Carrick.
After the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Carrick led the team independently for the first time and reached an important victory, which secured a place in the knockout phase of the Champions League.
- We came here to win. I believed we could and that we were ready. It was not an easy match, they are a solid team. They make you work hard – said Carrick and added:
- But the guys pegged away all the game to win. It was not easy in the previous days and this victory is for Ole. There is a lot of work ahead of us and thank God this turned out well – said Carrick.
He also commented on the game of his team, and the fact that he reached the victory, although he was inferior on the field.
- I don’t think anyone normal hoped that we would play nice football here. When you suffer defeats in a row and you are not in good shape, neither individually nor as a team, it is not easy to click. I think this is the best for us – Carrick concluded.
