The Netherlands will be out to prove a point in their second group game of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, after a disappointing start saw them held to a 2-2 draw by Finland. Despite entering the tournament with a flawless qualification record ten wins from ten and just three goals conceded the Jong Oranje were forced to come from two goals down in their Group D opener, exposing defensive frailties in the process.
Manager Michael Reiziger, unbeaten in all but one of his 18 matches in charge since taking the reins in July 2023 (W14, D3, L1), labelled the result a “wake-up call”. With ambitions of reaching the semi-finals for the fifth time in six tournaments, his side will need to rediscover the steel and fluency that saw them cruise through qualifying with the best record of any nation.

Standing in their way is a confident Denmark side, who secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Ukraine on matchday one. The Red and Whites arrived at the tournament on the back of a winless four-game friendly run (D2, L2), but have now remarkably won six consecutive group-stage matches at the U21 Euros, a run stretching back to 2019.
Despite only progressing beyond the group stage in two of their last six appearances, a victory here would see Denmark seal a place in the quarter-finals with a game to spare a notable achievement, especially given their underdog status heading into this fixture.
Players to Watch:
Dutch forward Noah Ohio has been prolific at U21 level, registering 11 goal contributions in as many competitive appearances (7 goals, 4 assists). Denmark’s Will Osula, who plays for Newcastle United, made a strong start to the tournament with a goal and an assist against Ukraine. Impressively, he has now contributed to at least one goal in five of his last six U21 outings.

Hot Stat:
A minimum of two goals have been scored in 18 of the Netherlands’ last 20 matches a trend that suggests another action-packed encounter could be on the cards.
