SIMPLY THE BEST: Iga Swiatek named the tennis player of the year!

Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek was announced today as the WTA player of the year, after she reached the first place in the ranking list in April and remained in that position until the end of the year.

Swiatek (21) finished the year with 67 victories and eight titles. That included a run of six straight titles and a 37-match streak from February to July that is the longest winning streak in women’s tennis in 25 years.

She rose to the top of the WTA following Ash Barty’s retirement, and during the season she also won the French Open in June and the US Open in September, becoming the first woman to win two Grand Slams in a season since Angelique Kerber in 2016.

The award for WTA coach of the year went to David Witt. He works with American Jessica Pegula, who reached the third place in the ranking in 2022 and was a quarterfinalist in three Grand Slam tournaments.

Barbora Krejcíková and Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic, who won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, were chosen as the best in the doubles competition.

Betrice Haddad Maya from Brazil was named the most improved player, and Zheng Qinwen from China was named Rookie of the Year.
