Naomi Osaka’s pursuit of her first title in four years concluded in disappointment as the former world number one had to retire due to an injury after securing the initial set of the Auckland Classic final against Denmark’s Clara Tauson on Sunday.
The match ended in an anticlimactic manner, and Tauson remarked that claiming her third WTA Tour title after a similar hiatus did not alleviate the experience of what she considered the worst final she had competed in. “I must express my apologies for this final. Naomi was delivering some excellent tennis. I just feel sad about today’s events,” Tauson commented. “Once I process this, I’m sure I’ll be very pleased with my week. I’m happy to have won, but not entirely.” Osaka, who last claimed one of her four Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in 2021, made her return to the circuit a year ago following an extended maternity leave, yet faced challenges with consistency and concluded the season ranked outside the top 50. She displayed flashes of her formidable abilities in Auckland, securing a double break against Tauson with powerful shots from both wings in the opening set, which she won 6-4, despite a late service break.
The 27-year-old Japanese athlete was visibly emotional, tears welling up as she received medical attention for an apparent abdominal issue before the next set commenced, ultimately leading her to withdraw and raising concerns about her readiness for the upcoming Australian Open this month.

Despite the setback, she appeared more upbeat during the award ceremony, quipping that missing breakfast might have contributed to her loss. “I just want to express my gratitude to everyone for the warm welcome in this beautiful city. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing here,” said Osaka, without elaborating on her condition.

“I’m truly sorry for how things concluded but I hope you appreciated the tennis we played. I’m just thankful to be here.” The major tournament at Melbourne Park, where Osaka has claimed two titles, is set to start on January 12.
