Nick Kyrgios set for surprise French Open return in Doubles with Jordan Thompson

Nick Kyrgios is set to make an unexpected return to the French Open for the first time since 2017, partnering fellow Australian Jordan Thompson in the men’s doubles tournament.

The 30-year-old has struggled with a series of injuries—foot, knee, and wrist—since reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022. He has played just four singles matches so far in 2025, managing a solitary win at the Miami Open in March.

Kyrgios had not initially planned to compete on the clay courts of Roland Garros this year, but changed his mind following the suspension of Max Purcell—Thompson’s regular doubles partner—due to a doping ban.

“The French Open was never really on the cards,” Kyrgios told The Canberra Times. “But after the stuff with Max Purcell, Jordan was looking for a partner and he asked me if I wanted to play. We’ve played at the French Open before, so it’ll be good to get out there and play with another fellow Aussie and have a bit of fun.”

Known for his electrifying style and outspoken persona, Kyrgios remains one of the most talked-about figures in tennis. While he is yet to claim a Grand Slam singles title, he won the 2022 Australian Open men’s doubles alongside close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Kyrgios has not played at Roland Garros since a second-round exit in 2017 and has often voiced his dislike for clay. However, this latest appearance marks a notable shift as he eases back into competition.

Despite questions over his long-term future in the sport, Kyrgios is expected to resume his singles campaign during the upcoming grass-court season, with his sights set on Wimbledon once again.

The 2025 French Open begins on May 25, and Kyrgios’ return will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike.
