Rafael Nadal and Francisco Roig, his longtime coach, have decided to end their great collaboration.
Nadal and Roig worked together from the beginning of the Spaniard’s professional career, the two of them in the team reached 22 Grand Slam titles, but this great collaboration came to an end.
“I want to inform you that Francisco Roig is leaving my team. He was an important figure in my career and I am very grateful to him for all the years of work and friendship. When we started working together, I was a child and together with my uncle Tony, we started going to tournaments,” Nadal began.
Nadal points out that he believes that Francisco will find a new engagement.
“Francis is a great coach, someone who knows tennis very well and he helped me a lot to get better.” I have only words of praise for him, I wish him all the best in his new project,” added Nadal.
The coach also spoke after the decision:
“With him, looking at all that, you can’t help but think that his limits are very high. I used to talk to him about numbers, he always kept his feet on the ground. It’s like he expected to have a good career, but not as special as he has. What I appreciate most about Rafa is his modesty, ability to listen and progress.
And that he gets points with a few weapons, when he is not playing the best tennis. And there is something that is very important in tournaments. When he finds his game, he loses hard. He has continued for years in the Top 10. Even in the years when he struggled, when it was mentally difficult for him to compete, he was the only one who did not fall out of the Top 10,” concluded Roig.
