Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk made headlines not only for her commanding 6–4, 6–2 victory over Daria Kasatkina in the second round of the Italian Open, but also for a rare post-match handshake—a gesture loaded with political and personal significance.
Kostyuk, ranked 27th in the world, has been a vocal critic of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has consistently refused to shake hands with Russian or Belarusian players since the war began in 2022. However, this time was different. Kasatkina, who formerly competed under the Russian flag, now represents Australia after publicly condemning the war and severing ties with Russian sporting institutions. She has also not returned to Russia in more than two years, following her public coming out as gay and her outspoken stance against the Kremlin’s actions.

Kostyuk took to Instagram after the match to explain the context behind the handshake.
“Since the beginning of the war, I’ve chosen not to shake hands with Russian or Belarusian players,” she wrote. “But when someone not only tells the truth — calling Russia the aggressor — but also acts on it, that deserves respect.”
She praised Kasatkina’s courage in renouncing her Russian sporting citizenship and urged for continued action.
“Daria Kasatkina has clearly spoken out against the war and made the decision to give up her Russian sports citizenship. That takes courage — and I acknowledge it. I hope this is not the final step, but part of a deeper commitment.”

The 21-year-old Ukrainian concluded her post with a powerful message:
“I stand with Ukraine. I stand for truth, for dignity, and for those who choose to speak and act — when staying quiet would be easier.”

Kostyuk’s next challenge at the tournament will be against Canada’s Leylah Annie Fernandez as she continues her campaign in Rome.
