Novak Djokovic won the title in Cincinnati in an incredible final.
Many were amazed at how the Serbian tennis player withstood all the efforts at the age of 37 against Carlos Alcaraz, who was almost twice his age.
In a conversation with Tennis Channel, Djokovic revealed how he managed to beat the Spaniard.
“I have to believe that I can – I believe and tell myself that this way of thinking and nurturing it is the only way I can compete with young guys like Alcaraz,” Djokovic said.
Novak had only words of praise for Alcaraz.
“He is the leader of a new generation, what he has done in the last two years… It is difficult to find new positive words than the ones we have already said. The accolades are there, amazing guy, carries himself well on and off the pitch, amazing player. The only way for me to continue playing at this age is to increase my work even more throughout the day, to think about every, even the smallest detail that will help me maintain a high level.”
Now he is preparing for the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season.
“US Open and Grand Slam tournaments are my biggest goals over the years. When I came here to Cincinnati, I didn’t know how I was going to feel because I hadn’t played on concrete since February, and I hadn’t been in the US for two years. I was excited, I wanted to play a few matches before New York, I couldn’t have wished for a better tournament than this one, I didn’t lose a set until the final, I played great tennis, and the final was the best way to crown everything”, concluded Djokovic.
