Players from France and Argentina engage in brawl after Olympic quarter-final

The men’s Olympic football quarter-final between France and Argentina on Friday resulted in a major uproar on the field.

Managed by Thierry Henry, the host nation, France, emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, securing a spot in the semi-finals against Egypt. The only goal of the game was scored early on by Crystal Palace player Jean-Philippe Mateta.

This match added another chapter to the intense rivalry between these two football powerhouses.

Tensions have been running high ever since Argentina defeated Les Bleus in a thrilling FIFA World Cup final in December 2022, which was decided by a penalty shootout.

Following that victory, some Argentinian fans resorted to a derogatory chant aimed at France. This chant has faced widespread condemnation for its racist, homophobic, and transphobic nature.

Before the match on Friday, the Argentine national anthem received widespread booing from the crowd at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux. The situation after the final whistle also faced criticism from spectators, as there was a notable police presence aimed at preventing clashes between rival fans.

The events on the field quickly escalated out of control. Initially, images showed French substitutes and staff rushing from the bench to join the playing XI in celebration. Suddenly, a brawl broke out involving 30 individuals.

An enraged group of players then moved towards the sideline before ultimately engulfing the tunnel, where further disorder ensued.

Subsequently, France’s players emerged once again to revel in their victory before an impassioned home crowd.
