Three Maltese Karting Drivers, Mason Barun, Benjamin Piscopo, Jacob Micallef, and 250 international karting drivers travelled to Franciacorta Circuit to take part in the first round of the WSK Euro Series.
Mason Barun competed in a class with 29 other drivers. Despite facing various chassis and mechanical issues, he managed to qualify in the eleventh position. His journey was not without challenges, as he was forced off the track in the second corner during the first race, and the engine’s lack of speed hindered his competitiveness despite improvements to the chassis setup. He fell to P22 and P21 in the second race and then in the third race. In the prefinal, he advanced to P13 from 20 drivers, a commendable result but not enough to qualify for the final race. After the race, Barun’s gratitude and love for his family echoed his resilience: “Competing against such talented drivers was a tough challenge. I want to sincerely thank my family for their unwavering support, especially my parents, for the sacrifices they have made for me. I appreciate and love you all!”
Benjamin Piscopo qualified in position 38 out of 47 drivers in the GR3 under 10 class. In the first heat, he moved to P13; in the second heat, he moved to P18 and returned to P13 in the third heat. He finished the Pre-Final in P10 and the Final in P20. After the race, Piscopo expressed his satisfaction with the result, which he believed would boost his confidence for the upcoming National Italian Championship race in Sarno from the 18th to the 21st of July. His positive outlook and determination were evident in his words: “We are very pleased with the result, which gives us confidence for the coming race of the National Italian Championship, which will be held in Sarno from the 18th to the 21st of July.”
Jacob Micallef, who raced in the OK Senior Class with 42 drivers, qualified in the 12th position. As the competition intensified, he finished in 15th place after the heats and 20th place in the final, showcasing his competitive spirit and determination.
The second round of the WSK Euro Series, a highly anticipated event, is set to take place in Sarno on the 29th of September. The excitement is palpable as this upcoming race promises to be another thrilling chapter in the journey of these talented Maltese-karting drivers.
