Gilmour Borg to serve as Global Messenger for Inclusion

Special Olympics International has announced that, following a global call for athletes, Gilmour Borg, a Special Olympics Malta athlete, has been selected as one of ten global athletes to fulfill the role of Sargent Shriver Global Messenger for the period 2024 to 2027. As a Global Messenger, Gilmour will play a crucial role in leading the Special Olympics International movement’s campaign for a more inclusive world for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Dr. Lydia Abela, President of Special Olympics Malta, expressed heartfelt sentiments regarding Gilmour Borg’s appointment as Sargent Shriver Global Messenger, “It is truly an honour for Malta and Special Olympics Malta to have Gilmour representing millions of individuals with intellectual disabilities in his new prestigious role. Gilmour is a beacon of hope and an inspirational role model, and I am confident in his ability to champion the promotion of inclusivity within our societies on a global level.”

Describing Gilmour as a symbol of optimism, she underscored the importance of believing in the inherent potential of every individual, asserting that everyone possesses the capacity to make
positive contributions for the betterment of our nations.
Enthusiastic about this announcement, Gilmour Borg expressed that his new role in the Global Special Olympics movement comes with responsibility and its own challenges. “I want to be a solid voice of hope, courage, and determination” stressed Gilmour Borg as he now embarks on
a journey aimed in making a positive impact at different levels within our communities, societies, and nations.

For two decades, leaders among Special Olympics athletes have fulfilled the distinguished position of Sargent Shriver Global Messenger. As ambassadors for the movement, these individuals
spearhead the campaign for a more inclusive world for those with intellectual disabilities. Their active involvement and leadership in a variety of global, regional, and local events, both within and outside the Special Olympics Movement, serve to challenge the perspectives of political
leaders, policymakers, educators, employers, and society at large.
