Double Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee announces retirement

Alistair Brownlee, Great Britain’s illustrious triathlete, has decided to retire from professional sports, closing an 18-year career decorated with unparalleled achievements including two Olympic gold medals.

Brownlee, who remains the only athlete to win back-to-back Olympic titles in the individual triathlon, announced his retirement on social media, expressing a mix of contentment and excitement for the future.

At 36, Brownlee has been a dominant force in triathlon, starting his Olympic journey at the Beijing 2008 Games. His career highlights include an 11-second victory over his closest rival, Javier Gomez, at the London 2012 Olympics, followed by a successful defence of his title in Rio 2016. Beyond the Olympics, Brownlee also boasts four World Championship titles and four European Championship titles, making him the only male triathlete to simultaneously hold European, World, and Olympic titles.

One of the most memorable moments of his career came during the 2016 World Triathlon Series event in Mexico, where he helped his brother Jonny cross the finish line after he nearly collapsed just meters from the end. This act of sportsmanship went viral, cementing the Brownlee brothers in the hearts of fans worldwide.

Aside from his competitive achievements, Brownlee and his brother Jonny have been pivotal in promoting triathlon through the Brownlee Foundation, which has introduced the sport to over 5,000 children, encouraging active lifestyles regardless of background.

Reflecting on his retirement, Brownlee shared his eagerness to explore new challenges and enjoy a slower pace of life, although not too slow, he joked. He plans to engage in various activities and projects he previously had to sideline due to his demanding sports schedule.

In his retirement, Brownlee will continue to serve on the IOC Athletes’ Commission and the Board of the British Olympic Foundation, roles that will allow him to stay connected to the sports world while pursuing other interests.

As the triathlon community bids farewell to one of its greatest athletes, Alistair Brownlee looks forward to sharing more about his career and future endeavours in the coming months, always with gratitude for the support that has propelled him to such lofty heights.
