Birgu are once again setting their sights on Regatta glory, with strong belief within the camp that they have the structure and mentality required to reclaim top honours.
When speaking to Malta Sport, Vice President Marlon Galea underlined the committee’s long term commitment to strengthening the club both on and off the water. He explained how, from day one, the administration has worked holistically in the best interests of Birgu, ensuring that investment and planning remain aligned with performance.
Galea highlighted the successful securing of government funding for the restoration of the historic 10 t’Awwissu regatta boat, a move he described as symbolic of the club’s respect for tradition while building for the future. He also confirmed a major boost to the squad with the acquisition of Dennis Thornton, a figure he referred to as “a legend of the canal”, expressing hope that his experience can help guide Birgu towards another shield.
From the athletes’ perspective, Clayton Darmanin stressed the practical impact of Thornton’s arrival. He noted that the strengthened squad will allow him to better manage his physical load, enabling him to focus on two key races.

Darmanin also pointed to the crew’s mentality as a decisive factor, insisting that Birgu possess the hunger and unity required to replicate last year’s success.
With a blend of tradition, strategic reinforcement and a driven squad, Birgu appear determined to remain at the forefront of the Regatta scene.
