New Bocci pitch inaugurated at Dar il-Madonna tal-Mellieħa

Following the success of the first bocci pitch at the Imtarfa elderly home, a second residential bocce pitch has now been inaugurated—this time at Dar il-Madonna tal-Mellieħa. This project, led by Active Ageing and Community Care (AAKK), is part of an ongoing commitment to providing more opportunities for physical and social activities for the elderly.

The new bocci pitch was built at Dar il-Madonna tal-Mellieħa after several residents expressed great interest in the sport and had also participated in the opening of the Imtarfa pitch. Special attention was given to accessibility, ensuring that individuals with physical difficulties, including wheelchair users, can participate fully.

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, emphasized that such initiatives highlight the positive impact of investing in physical and social activities for seniors. “The experience at the Imtarfa pitch showed us that the elderly truly enjoy this sport, which is why we continued investing in it. We are now working to identify more locations within residential homes, including San Vinċenz de Paul, to create additional spaces where seniors can engage in this activity, helping them remain both physically and mentally active.”

Bocci is not only a great physical and mental activity, but it also promotes social interaction, particularly among men who are often less likely to participate in other activities.

The new pitch will be available to the residents of the home, Day Centre attendees, and elderly members of the community. The AAKK also plans to organize tournaments between residential homes and community members, giving seniors more opportunities to meet, compete, and enjoy the game together.
