Nice fight to salvage Champions League hopes in final showdown with Brest

Nice’s ambitions of reaching the UEFA Champions League hang in the balance heading into the final round of Ligue 1 action, following a costly 2-0 defeat to Rennes last time out. A win in that fixture would have put them on the brink of securing a top-four finish and potentially a place in the new league phase of the Champions League. Instead, the Eaglets must now fend off pressure from Lille and Strasbourg to cling onto fourth spot, which would at least guarantee a place in the UCL qualification rounds.

The stakes could not be higher for Franck Haise’s side. A defeat against Brest, combined with unfavourable results elsewhere, could even see them miss out on European competition entirely. However, the scheduling may offer some comfort. Nice have won their last six Ligue 1 matches played on a Saturday, providing a sliver of hope that history might be on their side.

That same history does not bode well for Brest. They’ve failed to score in five of the last six meetings between the two teams and haven’t won an away match against Nice since 1989. While they arrive on the back of consecutive victories, both with clean sheets, those results come too late to mount any serious bid for European qualification.

For Brest and coach Éric Roy, the campaign has largely been one of missed opportunities, particularly on the road. The Pirates have failed to win a single away match against any side currently in the top ten, and their record when falling behind offers little encouragement. Brest have collected just one point from losing positions all season, tied for the worst mark in the division.

Evann Guessand will be a key figure for the hosts. The Nice forward scored the decisive goal when these sides met in November and has made a habit of fast starts, with five of his last six Ligue 1 goals coming before the interval. For Brest, Ludovic Ajorque has been the main attacking outlet with 13 goals to his name, though his physical style has also seen him commit a league-high 59 fouls.

One key trend to watch: Brest’s Ligue 1 fixtures have featured a league-high 57 first-half goals this season, expect action early as Nice aim to keep their Champions League dream alive.
