Juan Ayuso claimed a stunning solo victory in the seventh stage of the Giro d’Italia, powering past his rivals in the final 500 metres to win the first uphill finish of this year’s race. The Spanish rider crossed the line ahead of teammate Isaac Del Toro and former Tour de France champion Egan Bernal after an intense battle on the climb from Castel di Sangro to Tagliacozzo.
Ayuso’s explosive final attack saw him break away from the leading group, which also included Giulio Ciccone and Antonio Tiberi. None could match his pace on the punishing final ascent, and the 21-year-old sealed a breakthrough stage win with a performance that underlined his growing status in the peloton.
While Ayuso celebrated the stage, the overall standings also saw a significant shift. Primoz Roglic, who finished fourth on the day, moved into the maglia rosa as overall race leader, overtaking Mads Pedersen. The Slovenian now leads the general classification, adding another chapter to his decorated Grand Tour career.
Ayuso’s victory was more than just a showcase of talent—it sent a message to the established contenders. On the Giro’s first true test of climbing form, the young Spaniard proved he is not merely supporting his leader Roglic but is capable of shaping the race himself. The climb provided the first real glimpse of how the general classification favourites are shaping up, and Ayuso’s performance may shift the dynamics within his own team.
The result also marked a turning point in the battle for the pink jersey. Pedersen had fought valiantly to retain it in recent stages, but the tougher terrain of today’s route proved too much. Roglic now sits atop the standings, though the gaps between the main contenders remain narrow, with much of the race still to come.
While no major time differences separated the top riders, the psychological impact of Ayuso’s attack and Roglic’s leadership change will be felt in the days ahead. With tougher mountain stages on the horizon, both Ayuso and Roglic have laid down a marker. The Giro d’Italia, it seems, is only just beginning to take shape.
