Murillo’s late strike sends Marseille top after dramatic comeback win at Strasbourg

Marseille went top of Ligue 1 with a dramatic 2-1 victory at Strasbourg, sealing their first away points of the season and a first win in this fixture since 2022. The visitors dominated early, with Timothy Weah’s deflected effort forcing goalkeeper Mike Penders into a save that fell to Amine Gouiri, who could not convert. Strasbourg briefly thought they had the opener when Emanuel Emegha beat the line and rounded Geronimo Rulli, only to be flagged offside.

The chance lifted the hosts and Diego Moreira soon found Valentin Barco with a sweeping pass, but the Argentinian could not hit the target at full stretch. Marseille reasserted control before the interval as Gouiri drew a free kick save from Penders and then poked narrowly wide, while Igor Paixao tested the keeper at the near post.

Five minutes into the second half Strasbourg struck. Emegha chased a long pass down the right and squared for substitute Abdoul Ouattara to guide into an empty net. The assistant’s flag went up, but VAR confirmed the goal. Gouiri’s frustration continued with a cushioned volley that drifted inches past the post, and at the other end Nayef Aguerd made two vital interventions to deny Joaquin Panichelli.

Those blocks proved pivotal. Strasbourg surrendered possession in their own half and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg fed Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, whose first effort was saved by Penders before he buried the rebound. Moments later Hojbjerg headed against the post as Marseille pressed for the winner.

It arrived in the first minute of stoppage time. Emerson Palmieri’s header was tipped onto the bar by Penders, who could not clear the danger, and Michael Murillo followed up to thump in the decisive goal and break Strasbourg hearts.
