Mercedes Champion’s Contract Negotiations in Limbo Amid Ongoing Car Struggles and Impressive Performance by Teammate
As the 2023 Formula One season unfolds, rumors have been circulating about the possibility of Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, making a switch to either Red Bull or Ferrari. However, both teams have downplayed the chances of a seat swap, leaving Hamilton’s future in F1 uncertain.
Hamilton, who is currently in contract negotiations with Mercedes, has seen a period of long delay in his negotiations with Mercedes chief Toto Wolff. This has coincided with ongoing car struggles and the impressive performance of his teammate George Russell, leading to speculation that Hamilton may be considering other options.
No Room for Hamilton at Red Bull
Christian Horner, Red Bull team boss, has made it clear that there is no room for Hamilton at his team, stating that they are happy with their current drivers. He referred to back-to-back world champion Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, who won the Saudi Arabian GP from pole position, as the pair committed for this and next season. Horner added that Hamilton’s achievements in F1 are second to none, but he can’t see where they would be able to accommodate him.
Ferrari: The Next Destination for Hamilton?
Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan believes that a move to Ferrari would make much more sense for Hamilton, given the team’s need for a superstar driver and the possibility of Charles Leclerc growing impatient with life at Maranello. However, Leclerc has denied that he is eyeing Hamilton’s place and has stated his desire to become world champion with Ferrari.
Uncertainty for Hamilton’s Future in F1
With both Red Bull and Ferrari downplaying the chances of Hamilton joining their teams, his future in F1 remains uncertain. Despite the ongoing car struggles for both Mercedes and Ferrari, Horner believes that both teams will be able to challenge at the very front once again, as upgrades and changes to the regulations are expected throughout the year.
As the F1 season progresses, all eyes will be on Hamilton’s contract negotiations with Mercedes and whether or not he will remain with the team that has brought him so much success.
