Chloe Kelly scored the decisive penalty as England triumphed 3-1 in a shoot-out against Spain to secure the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 title, following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Sunday’s final. This victory not only saw the Lionesses retain their European crown but also served as redemption for their loss to Spain in the 2023 World Cup final.
Spain appeared on course to repeat their success from Sydney as they controlled much of the game at St Jakob-Park in Basel, taking the lead with a first-half header from Mariona Caldentey.
However, England remained composed, as they had done in previous matches after falling behind – notably in the quarter-final against Sweden and the semi-final versus Italy.
Alessia Russo nodded in the equaliser just before the hour, and with no further goals scored, the final went to penalties. Kelly, once again making a vital impact off the bench, stepped up to seal the win.
It was heartbreak for Spain, who missed three penalties in the shoot-out, including one from Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati, whose attempt was saved.
With this result, Sarina Wiegman’s side claimed back-to-back European titles, adding to their 2022 triumph over Germany at Wembley.
