Violence erupts as Brøndby suffer heavy loss to Víkingur Reykjavik

Brøndby fans caused serious trouble in Reykjavík on Thursday evening after their team suffered a heavy 3-0 loss to Icelandic side Víkingur Reykjavik in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Fights broke out between the two sets of supporters, and Brøndby fans reportedly damaged parts of the stadium. As a result, organisers cleared the away section before letting the home fans leave.

Police had to step in when violence escalated. Officers used pepper spray to control the situation, but two of Brøndby’s own security staff were accidentally sprayed and needed medical help. One Icelandic police officer was also reportedly punched in the face.

Víkingur’s CEO said the Danish supporters caused around €34,000 worth of damage, including broken toilets and other equipment.

The trouble didn’t stop there.

Later that evening, a group of Brøndby fans allegedly turned up at a bar where Víkingur supporters were gathered, wearing masks and starting another fight.

“They all came wearing masks and attacked us. It ended in a bloody fight… they were clearly bitter about the defeat,” an Icelandic fan told local media.

Brøndby fans have since been banned from that bar, and some are also accused of smashing a framed FC Copenhagen shirt on display before the game.

Brøndby now face a tough second leg as they try to turn things around and progress to the playoff round, where Strasbourg from France await.
