Salvatore “Toto” Schillaci, the Italian forward who was the leading scorer in the 1990 World Cup hosted by his home country, has passed away at the age of 59.
Schillaci had been receiving treatment for colon cancer and was being treated at a hospital in Palermo. According to a statement from the Palermo Civico hospital, Schillaci passed away on Wednesday morning after being admitted 11 days ago.
During the 1990 World Cup, Schillaci scored a total of six goals for Italy. He started as a substitute in Italy’s first match against Austria, scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory, and went on to win the Golden Boot award for being the top scorer of the tournament. Throughout his career, Schillaci only scored one other goal for Italy.
He played for various clubs including Messina, Juventus, Inter Milan, and the Japanese team Jubilo Iwata.
