Martin Demichelis is stepping down as the coach of River Plate after serving in the position for a year and a half due to a series of unsatisfactory outcomes, as announced by the esteemed Argentine football club on Saturday.

Club Atletico River Plate stated on the social media platform X that, “In agreement with the top authorities of the club, Martin Demichelis has vacated his position as the coach of the professional squad.” River Plate is one of Argentina’s two most popular football clubs and is a fierce rival of Boca Juniors. The club further mentioned that Demichelis, aged 43, will be coaching River Plate for the final time on Sunday in their home game against Sarmiento de Junin in the Primera Division, which is the top league in the country. Demichelis took over from Marcelo Gallardo in 2022, after Gallardo resigned following a tenure of almost nine years during which he secured the most titles in the club’s history. During Demichelis’ 18-month tenure, River Plate clinched three titles and competed in 86 matches. However, in the ongoing championship, River Plate has only managed to win one out of five matches.

The team is currently at the top of the standings, accumulating a total of 27 points. According to local media, the club’s fans, who are referred to as “los millonarios” (the millionaires), have not been impressed by this achievement. River Plate expressed their gratitude to Demichelis for his outstanding professionalism, dedication, and respect towards their team, as well as for his contribution to winning three titles.
