FIFA, the governing body of global football, has dismissed Argentina’s grievances regarding the disallowance of a last-minute equalizer in the opening match of the Summer Olympics against Morocco, according to Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, the President of Argentina’s football association (AFA). On Saturday.
Tapia stated that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee rejected the protest filed in relation to the incidents that took place during the match against Morocco.
Tapia is now seeking clarification on the decision.
Argentina suffered a 2-1 defeat to Morocco in Wednesday’s match, which marked the commencement of the men’s football competition at the Paris Olympics. The match was initially halted due to pitch invasion by a group of fans, and two hours later, the video assistant referee (VAR) disallowed Argentina’s final goal. Organizers of the Paris Olympics announced on Thursday that they are investigating the cause of the pitch invasion.
“In order to protect our rights, AFA will inquire about the basis for the decision and assess the applicable appeals,” Tapia stated.
Football enjoys a dedicated fan base in Argentina, having achieved three World Cup triumphs – the most recent being against France in 2022.
Argentina also emerged victorious in the premier continental league of the Americas earlier this month, triumphing over Colombia in another tumultuous final held in Miami and securing a historic 16th victory in the Copa America.
