Inter snatched a dramatic victory at the Bentegodi as a 94th-minute own goal from Frese gave Cristian Chivu’s side all three points in the Serie A lunch match.
Piotr Zielinski put Inter ahead after 15 minutes with a fine first-time volley from the edge of the area after an inventive corner routine by Hakan Calhanoglu. Verona grew into the game and levelled on 40 minutes when Giovane arrowed a powerful right-footed shot beyond Yann Sommer. Moments before the interval, Orban struck the post as the hosts threatened a turnaround.
Chivu introduced Denzel Dumfries, Sebastiano Esposito, Nicolo Barella and Federico Dimarco after the break to lift Inter’s tempo, but Verona held firm and looked dangerous on the counter. With the match drifting towards a draw, Barella’s stoppage time cross was glanced on by Esposito and then deflected off Frese into his own net, catching Lorenzo Montipo by surprise and sealing the points.
The win is Inter’s second in a row in the league and moves the Nerazzurri to within one point of leaders Napoli, pending Milan against Roma. Verona remain in the relegation zone after a cruel finish.
