Napoli may lose their top position in the Serie A this weekend following a 2-2 draw against Lazio, but coach Antonio Conte commended the team for adjusting to changes forced by injuries.
Currently leading with 56 points, Napoli risks being overtaken by Inter Milan, just two points behind, if Inter wins against Juventus on Sunday.
“I am pleased with the team’s performance. We were aware of Lazio’s capabilities,” Conte expressed during a press briefing.
While there is some disappointment over dropping points in the last 15 days, Conte highlighted the significance of the recent draw compared to previous matches. Despite challenges, Napoli’s resilience was evident in their refusal to concede defeat.

In recent fixtures, Napoli drew 1-1 with Roma on Feb. 2, only for Angelino to equalise in extra time. This was followed by another 1-1 draw at home against Udinese in the subsequent week.
“I admire the determination of these individuals who consistently strive to overcome challenges,” remarked Conte. “Our current position is a testament to this unwavering determination, which is exceptional in our context. Opinions may vary, but today’s game was a success despite the fourth alteration in our tactics. “For those familiar with football and the complexities of tactical adjustments, the effort involved in changing tactics four times within seven months is truly substantial… We press on with determination, always aiming to give our all.”

Napoli faced another setback as forward David Neres joined the growing list of absent players, expected to be sidelined for approximately a month due to a muscle injury. Earlier, they had to cope with the absence of defenders Mathias Olivera (calf strain) and Leonardo Spinazzola (muscle problem). “When we received news of Neres’ injury, alongside Spinazzola and Olivera’s setbacks, we had to adapt,” Conte explained. “Integrating defender Alessandro Buongiorno back into a four-man defence after his two-month absence was challenging. Nevertheless, the team performed admirably, demonstrating our solid principles that transcend tactical formations.”
“I was reluctant to alter the midfield trio and capitalise on the attributes of the midfield players; we will assess how long we continue with this setup.”
