Rabat Veterans see off Birkirkara St Helens in final

Rabat Veterans beat Birkirkara St Helens 2-1 in the final of the David Cluett Memorial Cup. The first competition organized by the Veterans Malta Football Association marked the beginning of a busy season.

Rabat emerged as the finalists after defeating Żejtun Red Stars 6-2 and the current champions MFPA 5-4, while Birkirkara St Helen’s beat Żurrieq Wolves 4-1 and Gżira United 6-2. Birkirkara St Helen’s took an early lead in the first quarter thanks to Ayrton Buhagiar’s goal. In the second half, Rabat was determined to turn the tables and managed to equalize through their new player, Andre Scicluna. However, at the last minute of the game, Adam Smeir scored the winning goal for Rabat. After the match, the late David Cluett’s daughters, Rachel, Emma, and Julia Cluett, presented the cup to Rabat Veterans’ captain, Adam Smeir, in the presence of VMFA president Malcolm Camilleri and Azeta Ltd director Kurt Zarb, who sponsored the competition.

The line-up for Birkirkara St Helen’s included: James Borg, Ayrton Buhagiar, Bojan Kaljevic, Christian Caruana, Clayton Micallef Vassallo, Colin Ciantar, Daniel Scerri, Firas Aboulezz, Jeffrey Chetcuti, Justin Zammit, Mario Caruana, and Robert Perkins.

Meanwhile, Rabat Veterans’ team consisted of: Ivan Cassar, Adam Smeir, Byron Fenech, Darren Galea, Garrett Magri, Gilbert Camilleri Lowell, Melvin Borg, Ibrahim Tarek, Timothy Zammit, Andre Scicluna, Joseph Caruana, and Luke Portelli. The referee for the match was Ray Tabone.
