DISREGARD OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN QATAR: Immigrant workers are suffering, Hamilton also raised his voice!

We wrote to you yesterday about the stadiums in Qatar, where the World Cup will be played, but the International Labor Community has now announced shocking data.

Fifty immigrant workers were killed and more than 500 were seriously injured last year in Qatar on construction sites for the 2022 World Cup, the International Labor Organization (ILO) reported.

This is not the first time that Qatar has faced accusations of treating hundreds of thousands of workers, mostly from Asia.

According to the report of the ILO, which is a UN agency, most of the killed immigrant workers died in falls or traffic accidents, mostly in the workplace.

In addition, 506 immigrant workers were seriously injured in 2020, and 37,600 of them had minor or moderate injuries, the report said.

The International Labor Organization states that there are omissions in the collected data and that it relied on institutions that do not categorize the same casualties and injuries at work.

In a statement, the head of that UN agency in Qatar, Max Tunon, said that the data were not always collected in a systematic way, and called for the establishment of a national platform, where all data will be collected.

Qatar welcomed the publication of this report, stating that it reflects the country’s commitment to cooperate transparently on workers’ rights.

“Qatar is studying the report’s recommendations and will continue to work with the ILO,” a government spokesman said.

In February, Doha sharply denied the information of the British daily Guardian, according to which 6,500 immigrant workers have lost their lives in Qatar since 2010, but still refuse to announce the exact number of deaths.

All this is followed by a statement by Formula 1 driver Luis Hamilton. This weekend, the race is being held in Qatar, and the world champion also spoke about (dis) respect for basic human rights in this country.

  • We are very aware of the problems in some countries we come to. But, it seems that Qatar is one of the worst countries in this part of the world – said Hamilton and added:
  • Human rights and equal rights for all, these are very serious topics – Hamilton concluded.
