Gilbert Agius’s tenure as head coach of Indonesian club PSIS Semarang has officially come to a close. After nearly two years and three months at the helm, the Maltese tactician departs following an official announcement by the club. With four matches remaining in the 2024/25 Liga 1 season, Agius will be succeeded by Muhammad Ridwan, who had previously served as interim coach and team manager under his leadership.
Despite a difficult run of recent results, which saw PSIS Semarang slip down the standings, Agius leaves behind a legacy of significant progress. His time at PSIS was marked by notable achievements, including guiding the team to a sixth-place finish last season, which was their highest final standing in recent years. Throughout 73 matches, Agius oversaw 23 victories and 15 draws, making him statistically the most successful coach in the club’s modern history. Gilbert Agius’s success abroad builds on a glittering football career at home. A legend in Maltese football, Agius spent almost his entire playing career at his hometown club Valletta FC, with only a short loan spell at Italian side Pisa during the 2001–02 season. At Valletta, Agius became an icon, having his famous number 7 shirt retired in his honour. He remains Valletta’s most capped player and all-time leading scorer, as well as the player who has won the most honours in the club’s history. Moreover, he holds the record for the most goals scored by a Maltese player in European competitions with 10 goals.
Over his illustrious career, Agius won the Malta Football Association’s Player of the Year award on three occasions, during the 1996–97, 2000–01, and 2006–07 seasons, further underlining his dominance in the local game. Even after retiring from playing, he continued to serve Valletta in various capacities, stepping in as assistant manager and leading the team as caretaker coach when needed, most memorably guiding them to a league title in 2019 after a decider victory against Hibernians.
