James Maddison, is set to undergo a crucial knee scan following a concerning incident during Sunday’s North London derby draw against Arsenal.
The game saw a rollercoaster of events, including Cristian Romero’s own goal and Bukayo Saka’s penalty putting Arsenal ahead twice, only to be countered by the brilliance of Spurs’ captain, Son Heung-min, who netted two goals – both expertly set up by James Maddison.
However, the game took a worrying turn when Maddison hyperextended his leg while challenging Jorginho for the ball in the second half. The sight of him clutching his knee in agony raised concerns of a potential serious injury. Despite his valiant effort to continue playing, Maddison was ultimately substituted late in the game.
Maddison downplayed the issue when speaking to Sky Sports News after the match, stating, “I had a little moment when I tackled Jorginho where I jolted my knee a little bit. You do not want to ever be playing in a derby where you are not at 100 per cent because it can cost the team, so I had to come off for the last little period.”
Nevertheless, according to reports from the Evening Standard, Tottenham will not take any chances and will send the 26-year-old for scans later this week to ensure there is no significant injury. Encouragingly, Maddison did not require an ice pack or crutches when leaving the stadium.
Maddison, who arrived at Tottenham from Leicester City, has made an immediate impact with two goals and four assists in just six Premier League appearances. His outstanding performances earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award for August, while manager Ange Postecoglou claimed the Manager of the Month accolade as Spurs enjoyed their best start to a season in 58 years.
Unfortunately, Maddison wasn’t the only casualty for Tottenham in the thrilling derby. Brennan Johnson, making his full Tottenham debut, was forced off just after the hour mark with a hamstring issue. His condition will also be evaluated later this week, leaving Tottenham concerned about the fitness of both players ahead of their upcoming clash with Liverpool.
Tottenham has already faced injury setbacks this season, with Ivan Perisic suffering a devastating ACL injury that could potentially mark the end of his Tottenham career. Additionally, Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso, Rodrigo Bentancur, Bryan Gil, and Alfie Whiteman are all in recovery following surgeries.
On a brighter note for Tottenham fans, the club confirmed on Monday that they have secured a deal to sign 16-year-old Hajduk Split defender Luka Vuskovic when he turns 18 in 2025, adding a promising talent to their ranks for the future.
