Madrid's derby ends in a draw

Mbappe rescues Real Madrid in 1-1 draw with Atletico.

Real Madrid managed to secure a 1-1 draw against their city rivals Atletico Madrid in LaLiga on Saturday. Kylian Mbappe netted a goal in the second half to equalise after Julian Alvarez had given Atletico the lead in the first half. This result kept Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga with 50 points, one point clear of Atletico, who missed the opportunity to overtake them. Barcelona, currently third with 45 points, will travel to Sevilla on Sunday, where they could narrow the gap in the title race.

At the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the first half was dominated by Atletico, who took the lead when Alvarez converted a penalty in the 35th minute, following a foul by Aurelien Tchouameni on Samuel Lino inside the box. After the interval, Real Madrid responded with vigour, and Mbappe capitalised on a rebound in the 50th minute to bring the match to parity. Despite their efforts to secure a victory, they were thwarted by an outstanding Jan Oblak, who made several remarkable saves.

Atletico, under Diego Simeone’s management, came into the match on an impressive run, having triumphed in 19 of their last 21 matches across all competitions. They demonstrated why they possess the best defence among Europe’s top five leagues, having conceded only 15 goals in 23 games.

On Saturday, even without their key defender Robin Le Normand due to suspension, Simeone’s team maintained a formidable defence, thwarting Real’s impressive offensive line-up, which failed to produce any shots on target during the opening half. Lino on the wing and forward Alvarez were a persistent threat along the left flank, frequently highlighting the weaknesses in Lucas Vazquez and Tchouameni, who started in a Real defence missing its top four players because of injuries.

PENALTY

Atletico’s players vociferously protested a studs-up tackle on Pablo Barrios by Dani Ceballos in the 25th minute, demanding a straight red card. However, referee Cesar Soto Grado only issued a yellow. Just five minutes later, Atletico’s earlier grievances found merit when Tchouameni fouled Lino as the ball entered the box during a swift counter-attack. Initially unnoticed by the referee, the foul was identified after a VAR review, resulting in a penalty. Unfazed by the resounding boos from the packed Santiago Bernabeu crowd, Alvarez coolly chipped his penalty into the centre of the goal while Thibaut Courtois dived low.

Lino and Alvarez squandered key chances that could have provided the visitors with a more secure advantage. Consequently, they paid dearly as Real emerged more energetic after halftime, with Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo standing out in the wide areas. Within five minutes, they leveled the score when Rodrygo surged past two defenders on the right flank and delivered a cross to Jude Bellingham, who mishit his initial strike from close range. Gimenez blocked the rebound, which then landed at Mbappe’s feet, allowing him to score with the loose ball. Real pushed hard for victory but were thwarted by Oblak, who stopped close-range attempts from Vinicius, Rodrygo, Mbappe, and Bellingham, who also struck the crossbar, ensuring Atletico held onto a point.
