Brighton's Mitoma eliminates Chelsea from the FA Cup

Kaoru Mitoma orchestrated a thrilling turnaround for Brighton & Hove Albion, securing a 2-1 victory against Chelsea to advance to the FA Cup’s fifth round.

The match began with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen inadvertently granting Chelsea an early advantage, mishandling Cole Palmer’s cross into his own goal. However, Brighton quickly levelled the score, as Georginio Rutter nodded in a goal just seven minutes later. Despite Palmer having a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead for Chelsea before the break, it was Brighton who dominated the second half. Japanese winger Mitoma clinched the win in the 57th minute with a deft finish past Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez.

This defeat continues Chelsea’s winless streak away from home since early December, leaving the UEFA Conference League as their sole hope for silverware under manager Enzo Maresca. Meanwhile, Brighton, led by 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler, showed resilience following a heavy 7-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, bouncing back admirably despite a shaky start to the match.

Brighton winger Tariq Lamptey remarked, “It’s encouraging that everyone came together and demonstrated their fighting spirit. We proved our unity and managed to turn the situation around.” The outlook was grim for the home team when Palmer volleyed a cross towards the net, with Verbruggen mishandling it into his own goal. However, redemption soon followed as Rutter capitalised on Joel Veltman’s cross from the right, eluding two Chelsea defenders, and skillfully headed the ball past Sanchez. Brighton’s winning goal carried a hint of controversy, with suspicions of handball in the lead-up, before Mitoma calmly lifted his shot over Sanchez.
