Steve Borg set for emotional Malta farewell against Bosnia

Malta national team coach Emilio De Leo and long-serving defender Steve Borg spoke to the media on Saturday ahead of Malta’s international friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a match that will mark Borg’s final appearance for the national side.

De Leo welcomed back players returning from suspension and admitted that, given the limited preparation time, sweeping tactical changes were unlikely. Still, he stressed the value of every game, even friendlies, in evaluating the team’s progress.

“We didn’t have much time to change things,” said De Leo. “But for us, every match is important. Even friendlies are a way to test ourselves and see how far we’ve come.”

When asked about the challenge of facing Bosnia’s star forward Edin Džeko, De Leo emphasised team structure over individual matchups.

“We’re used to coming up against top players. It’s not just about stopping one individual, the strength of the team lies in our organisation,” he said. “We respect Džeko’s quality and will take the necessary precautions, but staying organised is our key focus.”

Sunday’s fixture at the National Stadium will be particularly emotional for 37-year-old Steve Borg, who will make his final appearance after 81 caps. Reflecting on his international career, Borg expressed pride and gratitude.

“Every game has been an honour,” said Borg. “Of course, there were special moments, like scoring the winner against Latvia in the 95th minute, but I’m proud of all of it, even the tough games.”

Asked whether he sees a future leader in the current squad, Borg praised the younger players and expressed his desire to support their journey.

“They all bring something different. I’m not special, they’re all talented in their own way,” he said. “Playing for Malta is a dream, and I’ll keep encouraging the next generation to go after it.”

Coach De Leo paid a heartfelt tribute to Borg, describing him as a professional and a role model both on and off the pitch.

“When I arrived, I found not just a great player but a great person,” said De Leo. “Steve has led by example with humility, determination, and consistency. He’s shown what it means to represent Malta, and he leaves a legacy for the younger players to follow.”

The match between Malta and Bosnia and Herzegovina will kick off at 19:00 on Sunday, 12th October, at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali.
