Germany’s goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, has announced his retirement from international football.
He represented his country 124 times since 2009. The 38-year-old player from Bayern Munich was instrumental in Germany’s victory at the 2014 World Cup, where he won the golden glove award. Neuer took to Instagram to share the news, stating that this decision was not taken lightly. Despite feeling physically fit and having the potential to play in the 2026 World Cup, he believes that now is the right time to end his chapter in the national team.
The German Football Association (DFB) praised Neuer as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time and expressed gratitude for his remarkable achievements and his inspiration to fans and fellow players worldwide.
“You have revolutionized the field of goalkeeping, leaving an indelible mark on it. Similar to this team, your team, you have served as a backup, captain, role model, world champion, and friend. We will deeply miss your presence.”
Neuer announced his retirement just two days after German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan also decided to retire from international football.
Bayern Munich, Neuer’s club, where he has achieved 11 Bundesliga titles, two Champions League titles, and two Club World Cup titles, will kick off their league campaign against Wolfsburg on Sunday.
