Manchester United in talks with Sporting regarding 39-year-old coach Ruben Amorim

Manchester United has reached out to Sporting regarding the appointment of head coach Ruben Amorim as their new manager. Discussions are reportedly underway to make the 39-year-old the successor to Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on Monday morning.

United would need to activate Amorim’s release clause at Sporting, and sources indicate they are willing to do so. This season, Sporting has maintained a perfect record in the Portuguese league, winning all nine matches while scoring 30 goals and conceding only two.

In the Champions League, Amorim’s team remains unbeaten, with two wins out of three games, placing them eighth in the group.

When asked about his future following Ten Hag’s departure, Amorim said at a pre-match press conference, “I anticipated that question, but I won’t discuss my future. I’ve always maintained that it’s not worth speculating on. I take pride in being the head coach of Sporting.”

Amorim has also been mentioned as a potential future manager for Manchester City, particularly with his close friend Hugo Viana set to join the club as director of football next season. He was considered for the Liverpool job this summer before Arne Slot was appointed, and he previously held discussions about replacing David Moyes at West Ham but later apologized for the publicity surrounding those talks.

At just 36, Amorim led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and secured a second title last season. He has also won the Taca da Liga three times, twice with Sporting and once with Braga.

A former midfielder for Benfica and Portugal, Amorim retired as a player in 2017 and began his managerial career at Braga two years later. He joined Sporting in March 2020, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
