FIFA president Gianni Infantino has expressed support for Katia Itzel Garcia, a Mexican referee who received death threats online after a recent Leagues Cup match.
Garcia officiated the game between FC Cincinnati and Monterrey, where she allowed a goal for Cincinnati that appeared offside. This decision caused outrage among Monterrey fans after their team lost 3–2.
Infantino said on Instagram,
“I am shocked and saddened by the threats made against Katia Itzel after the Monterrey vs Cincinnati match. Abuse and violence have no place in football or society.”
He added that FIFA stands behind Garcia, the Mexican Football Federation, and CONCACAF, and wants those responsible for the threats to be held accountable.
Garcia, who has also refereed in Liga MX, the Gold Cup, and the Olympic Games, has filed an official complaint. The FMF said it will support her through the legal process.
