Eight players leave England camp ahead of Japan friendly due to injuries

England manager Thomas Tuchel faces a significant selection headache for Tuesday’s friendly against Japan at Wembley after eight players were forced to leave the squad on Saturday with a range of injuries and fitness concerns.

Following Friday’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay, the FA confirmed the departures after a number of players picked up knocks during the game or in the build-up to it.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, defender Fikayo Tomori and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin are among those who have gone home.

John Stones returned to Manchester City having picked up an injury before Friday’s match, while Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) and Noni Madueke (Arsenal) were both hurt during the Uruguay game.

Madueke’s Arsenal teammates Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka have also headed back to their club.
