Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made an announcement stating that he will no longer participate in the Belgium national team under the current guidance of coach Domenico Tedesco.
Courtois, widely recognized as one of the finest goalkeepers globally, was excluded from the Belgium squad for the European Championship after a disagreement with Tedesco last year. Koen Casteels took his place for the Euros. Courtois expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country, stating, “I consider it a privilege to have worn the national jersey. I never could have imagined doing so over 100 times.” However, due to the aforementioned incidents with the coach and careful consideration, he has chosen not to rejoin the Belgian national team under Tedesco’s management.
Courtois acknowledged his responsibility in the matter but explained that his lack of confidence in the coach would hinder a harmonious atmosphere going forward. The 32-year-old goalkeeper, who suffered an injury but recovered in time to assist Real Madrid in winning the Champions League in June, also mentioned that the Belgian FA has accepted his decision and understands the underlying reasons behind it.
“I apologize if I have disappointed any of our supporters, but I firmly believe that this decision is in the best interest of Belgium. It helps to settle a debate and allows our team to fully concentrate on our goals. I sincerely appreciate your unwavering support, love, and understanding,” expressed Courtois.

There were doubts about Tedesco’s strategies, questioning whether he was the right person for the job, especially after Belgium’s elimination by France in the last 16 of the Euros.
The German manager, who was born in Italy, assumed his position in February 2023 and signed a contract extension prior to the commencement of the Euros.

However, despite being ranked at the top of the world rankings for almost three years and making it to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, Belgium has experienced underwhelming outcomes under Tedesco’s leadership.
