YoHealth Malta Premier – Closing Round
Floriana…..0
Valletta……0
Floriana and Valletta shared the points in a goalless draw in a YoHealth Premier League derby at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, with neither side able to find a decisive breakthrough.
Despite the fixture’s reputation for producing entertaining encounters, the latest meeting between the two rivals offered limited attacking quality. Clear scoring opportunities were scarce, with both teams appearing cautious throughout much of the contest.
Valletta showed greater attacking intent over the ninety minutes and enjoyed the better chances, but they were unable to convert their opportunities. Floriana, by contrast, focused on maintaining their defensive structure and rarely troubled Valletta goalkeeper Adilson Maringa.
The opening half was largely uneventful, as the importance of the occasion appeared to weigh heavily on both teams. The most notable incident came around the twentieth minute, when an off the ball clash between Floriana defender Iago Mendonca and Valletta forward Ahem Adebayo led to a brief confrontation, with referee Fyodor Zammit cautioning both players.
Floriana’s best opportunity of the first half fell to Zach Scerri, who was set up by Grech on the edge of the area, but his effort sailed just over the crossbar. Valletta responded through Sava Radic, who fired over from close range after being picked out by Thaylor Aldama.
After the interval, Valletta increased the tempo in search of a goal. On fifty five minutes, Shaft Brewer tested Floriana goalkeeper Gabriele Cioletti with a powerful effort from the edge of the area, which was well saved. Brandon Paiber later sent a central free kick over the bar.
Valletta’s clearest chance arrived on seventy minutes following a swift counter attack. Jake Azzopardi released Messias into space, but the Brazilian’s effort was blocked twice by Cioletti, who produced an important intervention to preserve the clean sheet.
The stalemate leaves Floriana level with Gżira United at the top of the standings on ten points, one point ahead of Hibernians and two clear of Valletta.
