Wrexham, owned by American Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have made an audacious attempt to sign former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen in what could be one of the most remarkable transfers of the summer.
Recently promoted to the Championship, Wrexham have already strengthened their midfield with two new signings, including Lewis O’Brien, but manager Phil Parkinson is keen to add more experience and quality to compete in England’s notoriously demanding second tier.
According to the Daily Mail, Wrexham have approached Eriksen, who is currently a free agent after leaving Manchester United this summer. Eriksen’s representative, Martin Schoots, confirmed that the club’s ambitious project is impressive, saying: “Wrexham are really upgrading everything both on and off the field, and it is a hugely impressive project, as you can see from the presence of people like Michael Williamson there. But Christian still wants to play in a first-tier competition and he absolutely wants to stay in Western Europe. Some contacts are going on, but it has to suit both sides.”
The 33-year-old Danish international, once regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, has previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan. His career was dramatically interrupted during Euro 2020 when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch. Italian regulations subsequently barred him from playing in Serie A due to his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which led to his move to the Premier League.
While Wrexham hope to pull off the transfer coup, Eriksen has no shortage of options, with clubs from Saudi Arabia, the United States, Turkey, and Brazil all expressing interest. His decision is expected to hinge on whether he prioritises top-flight football or chooses to embrace a new challenge under Wrexham’s high-profile Hollywood ownership.
