Manchester United seek 3 point as they host Crystal Palace

Head coach Ruben Amorim may finally feel as if he’s making an impact on Manchester United, who’ve strung together three successive wins for the first time this season. That run includes back-to-back clean sheets, the latest of which came in Bucharest as the Red Devils secured safe passage to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League by beating FCSB 2-0, though that gives them a tight turnaround before hosting Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Amorim may well have to shuffle his pack as he looks to win consecutive league games for the first time since arriving in England. Old Trafford has been far from a safe haven for him however, with United losing four of their last five Premier League fixtures on home soil (W1). And recent H2H history suggests that’s unlikely to change as they’ve failed to score in the last three league meetings – they last blanked in four such games against a single opponent back in 1983!

Crystal Palace have established themselves as the experts in away matches in the Premier League, accumulating the highest number of points on the road since December. Prior to this round, they have garnered an impressive 13 points. In their recent performances, the team has triumphed in four out of their last five away matches (with one draw), and remarkably, three of those wins were achieved without conceding a goal. Furthermore, they are aiming to achieve their first streak of three consecutive victories on away grounds since May 2019.

The team’s concerns about relegation seem to be a thing of the past, and under Oliver Glasner’s leadership, they even have a chance to surpass their opponents with a victory this weekend. The travelling supporters, who were once intimidated by visits to this renowned stadium, can now approach the match with confidence, considering that they have emerged victorious in three of their last five encounters at United’s home ground (with two losses). This is quite an improvement compared to their record from 1922 to 2018, where they managed to win only a total of two matches in 22 away head-to-heads.

Players to keep an eye on: Kobbie Mainoo excelled in a more advanced position during the match against FCSB on Thursday, making him the first player for United since Wayne Rooney in 2004 to both score and assist in his initial major European start. Romain Esse, a recent signing for Palace, found the back of the net just two minutes after coming off the bench during his Premier League debut against Brentford last week. It’s worth noting that only three teenagers have ever scored in their first two appearances in the competition, all of whom either played for United or later represented them (Alan Smith, Federico Macheda, and Anthony Martial).

Noteworthy statistic: In 17 out of their 23 games this season, Man Utd has been unable to score before halftime, which is the highest number of occurrences in the Premier League.
