Liverpool await scan results on Isak injury after Tottenham win

Liverpool are awaiting scan results amid fears that record signing Alexander Isak has suffered a broken leg following Saturday’s victory over Tottenham.

The Sweden forward was injured while scoring the opening goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 win in London after a sliding challenge from Spurs defender Micky van der Ven. Isak, who had come on as a second-half substitute, was unable to celebrate with his teammates and left the pitch in visible distress.

Speaking immediately after the match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot admitted the early signs were concerning.

“If a player does not even try to come back, that is usually not a good thing,” Slot said. “But I cannot say anything more than that. It is just a gut feeling and nothing medical. Let’s not be too negative yet. We do not know. Let’s hope he is back with us soon.”

Reports on Monday from The Athletic and Sky Sports suggested Liverpool fear the 26-year-old has suffered a broken leg, an injury that would likely rule him out for a lengthy period.

Isak has endured a disrupted start to his Liverpool career following his £125 million move from Newcastle on transfer deadline day. He has made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals, after arriving at Anfield without a full pre-season due to a dispute with his former club. His campaign was then further interrupted by a groin injury.

Any extended absence would represent a significant setback for Slot, particularly with Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo not expected to return from a muscle injury until early in the new year.

That situation leaves Hugo Ekitike, who has scored five goals in his last four matches, and the rarely used Federico Chiesa as Liverpool’s only senior attacking options.

Liverpool’s title defence faltered earlier in the season following a poor run of results, but they have climbed to fifth place after extending their unbeaten league run to five matches.
