Everton’s new owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG), are expected to offer David Moyes the opportunity to return as manager following the sacking of Sean Dyche just hours before their FA Cup tie against Peterborough United. Moyes, who managed Everton from 2002 to 2013 before leaving for Manchester United, has been without a job since departing West Ham at the end of last season. TFG is keen on his Premier League experience and familiarity with the club as they seek to secure Everton’s top-flight status.
Sean Dyche’s departure, announced three hours before the FA Cup match, marked the end of his tenure that began in January 2023. Despite twice saving Everton from relegation, his poor results this season—just three league wins—and uninspiring style of play had eroded support among fans. Tensions over transfers with director of football Kevin Thelwell and Dyche’s admission that he could do no more with the current squad led to TFG’s decision. Dyche had been in negotiations over a severance package, with the club rejecting his demands for full compensation, citing a shift in his attitude.
Leighton Baines, the Under-18s coach, and captain Séamus Coleman have stepped in as interim managers. Dyche’s backroom staff also departed, and TFG is moving quickly to appoint a successor, with talks with Moyes advancing. José Mourinho, now at Fenerbahce, and Graham Potter were considered but not pursued.
Everton’s new owners had initially intended to maintain stability following their December 19 takeover, but defeats to Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth prompted a change in direction. Despite some positive results over the festive period, Everton sits just one point above the relegation zone, highlighting the urgency for a turnaround under new management.
