Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo hailed his side’s historic achievement as they reached their first FA Cup semi-final in 34 years, following a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
After a goalless 120 minutes at the Amex Stadium, Forest triumphed 4-3 in the shootout, with Belgian goalkeeper Matz Sels emerging as the hero by saving successive spot-kicks from Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gomez. Captain Ryan Yates, a lifelong Forest player, sealed the victory with the decisive penalty, sending the club and its fans into jubilation.

“We are so happy, all of us. It was a dream seeing our fans like that. There is nothing better,” Nuno told the club’s website. “In terms of the performance, I think the boys did really well. We controlled the midfield and I think we were dominant against a team that is difficult to control. To win is a huge moment for all of us and especially for Ryan Yates—he’s a one-club man, our captain.”
This victory marks Forest’s third consecutive FA Cup penalty shootout win, having previously edged out Exeter City and Ipswich Town in similar fashion.

Sels, whose crucial saves played a pivotal role, reflected on the moment with pride. “We had a few chances to score in the game, but we went to penalties, and I did my research, which helped the team. Over the last few weeks, we have worked on penalties. It’s different in training, of course, but I’m happy to help and save two penalties,” he said.
With Wembley now in sight, Forest will look to continue their incredible cup run, hoping to create more history as they set their sights on the FA Cup final.
