Karim Benzema has expressed his disappointment with the announcement of Lionel Messi as the winner of the 2022 FIFA Best Player award.
Benzema, who won the 2022 Ballon d’Or, believed that he deserved to win the prestigious award, alongside fellow contender Kylian Mbappe. Real Madrid was not represented at the ceremony in Paris due to the decision to award Messi.
Benzema took to social media to share a post listing his achievements from the past year, including personal awards such as the Golden Ball and the title of the best football player in Europe, as well as Real Madrid’s team successes such as winning the Champions League, La Liga, and Club World Cup. He also posted a photo with the message “Good night.”
It is up for debate whether or not Benzema is right in his belief that he deserved the FIFA Best Player award over Messi.
While Benzema had an exceptional season with Real Madrid, Messi also had a great individual season, leading his team to the Ligue 1 title and winning the Copa America with Argentina. Ultimately, the decision was made based on the votes of national team selectors and captains.
